Online collaboration platforms as a tool for becoming Future Fit
In today’s post I will talk about how to use the online platform Podio to inspire the team and help foster a spirit of openness and collaboration.
Eyekandi uses Podio throughout all our business operations, not only for the sustainable business work. Podio is an online platform for companies to communicate and collaborate online. It is a Citrix database, with some very clever danish front end design, and it works great.
In the vídeo I talk about how we use Podio to help us become Future Fit.
I walk you through our set up and the applications we have developed for this project, and also showing you exactly how we are using it.
Sustainable business operations means that we should consider the environment before we book our travels and print out documents for instance. By using Podio, we can collaborate in a way that saves me from having to travel as frequently to China.
Future Fit and sustainable business should be more than just slogans for the board room. We want to use the path towards Future Fitness to communicate inside of our organization as well. Change starts with the individuals, and by displaying an open process and include everybody in activities and efforts, we hope to make lasting changes.
In future blog posts I will talk about the activities we are doing here at Eyekandi to high light the Future Fit Goals within our own company.

A Future-Fit business is one that in no way undermines the possibility that humans and other life will flourish on Earth forever.
This heading is the credo of the new Business benchmark Future Fit. This is great news for companies like Eyekandi, since we want to have a strong focus on sustainable business.
Future Fit Benchmark, and their clearly stated Goals ( Which I will get back to over the course of this blog ) can help companies work towards becoming Future Fit in a more structured way. It will make it much easier for us to get this line of thought implemented throughout our supply chain as well.
Who we are
Eyekandi Ltd, our company, is involved in Product Development, Production Services and Supply Chain Management. In order for us to make an impact in the world when it comes to sustainability, we have to make sure our whole supply chain gets involved. Not just our offices and development team in China.
Future Fit has structured this in a way that the benchmark is open to use and reproduce from. We must always mention where we got the information from. It is published under a so-called Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License.
Future Fit Goals and KFI
As you can see from the downloadable PDF, the team over at Future Fit has come up with 21 Goals that a Future Fit company should strive to meet.
From my understanding, each Goal represents an ideal situation; such as Goal 1: Energy is from renewable sources. This will then be the Goal, and the first thing a company must do is to assess the CURRENT situation. Finding our baseline will help us track improvements.
What we have done so far
We first filled out a questionnaire where Future Fit asked a lot of questions concerning our Operations in both Thailand and China. It was very detailed. We had to find the power bills, figure out if our waste water could harm the local water shed, study our contracts with all the staff etc.
The process was almost as enlightening as the Benchmark itself. It has spun a lot of discussion and awareness in our company about sustainability.
As a company that has a Chief Sustainability Officer and use e-cars, develop solar products and pride ourselves with the fact that we are very green and responsible, it was honestly surprising that we had many areas where we did not meet the Benchmark.
The Benchmark will cover Environment, Customers, Employees, Communities, Society as a Whole and Suppliers. In some cases we out-performed the benchmark and in other areas we had not even thought of the consequences of our presence.

Is this for you?
There is always a risk that Benchmarks like this are too narrow, and focuses on specific areas of business, such as the Rainforrest Alliance, Fairtrade, Oeko-tex, Initative for Ethical Trade etc, so what Geoff Kendall and the team worked out had to be different and encompass the entire eco system, not only specific trades.
We have gone full into this, and in the blog posts to come, I will write about our experience with implementing a Future Fit thinking in our organization and in our entire supply chain. This could be a very interesting experience and the Goals are definitely worth the journey.
How we heard about Future Fit
As a supplier of services to Bright Products AS in Norway, we got introduced to Future Fit. Bright Products is a Norwegian company that wants to be Future Fit. Since we are a service provider and not a manufacturer, we focus on 14 of the 21 goals. But, we also work with Bright Products to verify the supply chain of their products. After doing the initial assessment, we saw that this was very relevant and will do the same in our own supply chains.
How does it work
As of now, I am not sure exactly how the Benchmark will be handled by Future Fit. Only self assessment is not enough, so I think there will be auditing companies or consulting companies involved in the reports. We will get more information about the way this will be handled soon, according to the company.
I have also asked about how to use the Future Fit logo and score on our web site and interaction with customers. The answer is that this is currently being resolved and will be presented soon. When we get the information from Future Fit, I will present it here in the blog.

Future-Fit Goals by Stakeholder
In today’s blog we list up the 21 Goals of the Future Fit benchmark. In later blog posts we will introduce the Challenges that lays behind the development of the Goals.
The Goals are divided into Stakeholders, and the first Stakeholder is the Environment. Environment is then divided into Physical resources and Operational Presence.
The Stakeholders are:
Due to climate destabilization, ocean acidification and what looks like a biodiversity crisis, we are facing a ecosystem degradation. The way we power our operations, and how we get water to drink and nurture our plants all play a role.
The way products are made and disposed of has a huge effect on our ability to sustain production. When the middle class of the world has grown as rapidly as it has, the use of non renewable resources, such as minerals and metals, has exploded. The current paradigm can not continue into the future unless we find ways of reducing, reusing and recycle those vital materials.
Future Fit Goals also look at Education challenges and the Health gap between rich and poor. In a sustainable world, everybody should have access to basic health care and education. We can argue how this should be done, but the Goal, I think, is pretty universal.

Yesterday, the mailman brought something very interesting. It was the newly published book about start-ups by Co-founder of Bright Products, Kristian Bye.
Kristian left a high paying job in the ad-world to start Bright Products, and succeeded.
He writes this book as part memoirs and part guide book for other entrepreneurs, and have coupled the book with a lecture program and he is now traveling with his book and speeches. A true entrepreneur!
The book is only available in Norwegian at the momement, so I am the only one in the office who gets to fully enjoy it, and I have.
I liked the book, not only because of the story, but because I feel he told the story in a very coherent way and I could really recognize the material, since I was part of the journey.
I think this is a book that most young business students should read, to hear from the actual start-ups, and not only the silicone valley or Wall Street themes that are normally featured in books like these.
