Light Hack #7: Use red light for pain, inflammation, and skin

Red light is amazing at recharging your mitochondria. Red light can also stimulate DNA and RNA synthesis, activate the lymphatic system and increase blood flow, which is good for carrying waste from the body and repairing damaged tissue. It can even decrease inflammation and swelling, all the way down to deep tissue.

That means more energy, less pain, and things like faster wound healing. Red light donates photons to your mitochondria via molecules called cytochromes, which allows them to make even more ATP for energy. This provides you with steady energy all day and better sleep at night.

How to use it: Install red lights in and around your home and use them in the early morning, at night, and therapeutically for an increase in mitochondrial function and collagen production.

For collagen synthesis, a couple minutes every day in front of a red light could significantly improve your skin’s tone, texture, redness, and signs of wrinkles and fine lines. You can also find medical-grade LLLT practitioners for a heavier dose of light.

 

Light Hack #8: Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT)

Low-level light therapy or LLLT is like a more intense version of sitting under a red light. This is a cold laser that concentrates light to one area on your body.

Athletes use LLLT for better athletic performance, probably because it increases strength and speeds up muscle recovery. It also helps to heal infections post-surgery, relieves chronic and acute pain (especially in your joints), and decreases inflammation. LLLT increases energy by stimulating mitochondria and boosting ATP production and blood flow. And it contributes to healthy skin by healing scars and burns and decreasing UV damage. Lasers shrink nerve inflammation, so putting an LLLT 3-4 inches above your belly button, right below the rib cage, can help with stomachaches and nausea, as well as an inflamed gut.

How to use it: You can find a practitioner that uses LLLT or buy one yourself. The medical-grade lasers are pretty expensive, but consumer-grade LLLT units run anywhere from a couple hundred to a couple thousand dollars. Eyekandi Life Tech is on the brink of bringing one of these products out into the market.

Light Hack #10: Add infrared light

Sunlight has infrared light, but you won’t get any of it from indoor lighting. You can’t see infrared light, but you can feel it; it is experienced as heat, and it supercharges your mitochondria.

You can get infrared light, which triggers even more energy production from your mitochondria in your eyes and skin, with a healthy dose of sun exposure, in incandescent bulbs (in very small amounts), or with an infrared sauna. Increased mitochondrial function, again, is going to increase blood flow, which is great for nutrient and oxygen transport and also speeds up detox pathways. This is why people are obsessed with infrared saunas.

How to use it: Switch all the bulbs in your house to incandescent, which emit a small amount of infrared. Find an infrared sauna with full-spectrum, near-infrared light. You also want to find one that emits low to no non-native EMFs (electric magnetic fields).

The Good Inhaled Nanoparticles – WHAAT??

‘Never give up on drug delivery ideas’ – that’s one of the big points Mr Derek Lowe gets out of this paper. The authors, part of a multi-centre team from sites in Italy and Germany, have previously shown that calcium phosphate nanoparticles could be a good carrier for delicate cargo such as microRNAs.

MicroRNAs are small non-coding RNA molecules (containing about 22 nucleotides) which can be found in plants, animals and some viruses, that functions in RNA silencing and post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression…

Such things tend to get degraded pretty quickly in the bloodstream; our bodies do not particularly want lots of nucleic acid strands floating around between the organs. Therapeutic peptides suffer from similar disadvantages – anyone working on one usually ends up spending lots of time modifying the original peptide structure to keep it around long enough in the body in order for it to be effective.

This paper shows that the CaP nanoparticles are effective carriers of therapeutic peptides, but what’s alarming is that they show them working through inhalation. What gave them this idea? Air pollution! Here is an excerpt from the paper so you can see what we’re talking about:

The rationale for the use of this unconventional administration route for targeting of the heart is based on the concepts that (i) during respiration the oxygenated blood moves from the pulmonary circulation first to the heart via the pulmonary vein and (ii) combustion-derived nanoparticles and ultrafine particulates inhaled through polluted air were recently shown by us (16) and others (17) to be present in the heart and causally associated with cardiac arrhythmia and dysfunction, suggesting that inhaled nanoparticles are deposited in the heart. Furthermore, CaPs can protect peptides from immediate enzymatic degradation and, because of their negative surface charge, provide cellular permeability via the membrane internalization.

It’s not over yet

There are a lot of issues which need to be addressed still, as the paper itself makes pretty clear. One thing is for sure, as with all inhalation routes, you have to wonder about the variation in lung function, both in healthy and diseased patients. Long-term studies of the effects on lung tissue would be needed, as well as a lot more pharmocokinetic work in general.

A Nobel Prize Winner for the use of Light Radiation

In 1903, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was granted to Mr Niels Ryberg Finsen to acknowledge his contribution to the treatment of diseases, especially lupus vulgaris also known as tuberculosis luposa, with the use of concentrated light radiation.

Tuberculosis luposa are painful skin lesions with a nodular appearance. These are found most often on the face: around the nose, eyelids, lips, cheeks, ears and neck. It is the most common Mycobacterium tuberculosis skin infection. The lesions may ultimately develop into disfiguring skin ulcers if left untreated.

Niemann–Pick disease

Mr Finsen suffered from Niemann–Pick disease. This inspired him to sunbathe and investigate the effects of light on living things.  Nieman-Pick disease is a subgroup of lipid storage disorders called sphingolipidoses. This is where harmful quantities of fatty substances, or lipids, accumulate in the spleen, liver, lungs, bone marrow, and brain.

As a result, Finsen is best known for his theory of phototherapy. According to this theory, certain wavelengths of light can have beneficial medical effects.

His most notable writings were Finsen Om Lysets Indvirkninger paa Huden (“On the effects of light on the skin”), published in 1893., and Om Anvendelse i Medicinen af koncentrerede kemiske Lysstraaler(“The use of concentrated chemical light rays in medicine”), published in 1896.

As seen on the Bulletproof Blog, Red light therapy, also known as photo-bio-modulation (PBM), has been around for around 40 years – ever since the invention of lasers.

“Red light therapy uses certain wavelengths of light to restore, repair, and protect tissue that is either injured, degenerating, or at risk of dying. While varying wavelengths affect the body differently, as far as healing with red light is concerned, the most effective wavelengths range from 630-670 and 810-880.”

But this is how it really works…

The PBM wavelengths affect bodily cells on a biochemical level by increasing mitochondrial function. This is the ability to produce energy in the cells. The more that the cells can produce energy, the better the body can function. When red light wavelengths are used on the skin’s surface, they penetrate 8-10 millimetres deep into the skin. So depending upon where the red light is used (head or knee, for instance), all of the surrounding skin layers, blood vessels, lymph pathways, nerves, and even hair follicles are affected.

The Benefits of Red Light Therapy (PBM)

Red light therapy works from the inside-out to enhance and increase mitochondrial function in cells. Therefore this, leads to several skin benefits. Red light reduces skin inflammation, smooths skin tone, repairs sun damage, fades scars and stretch marks, and even builds collagen in the skin which in turn reduces wrinkles. It also heals wounds and can prevent recurring cold sores or herpes simplex (some of us were burdened). PBM works on the lymphatic system to improve your body’s detoxification abilities by increasing blood flow. It may even stimulate hair growth in your hair follicles (check it out ladies!).

Photo – Bio – Modulation: Low Level Light Therapy

Low Level Light Therapy

Lasers or as we sometime call it low laser light therapy (LLLT) are instrumental in the stem cell field. Pablo Rosada, of the Institute of Regenerative Medicine in the USA has been using them for a number of years. Light therapy has many profound effects. It seems to have an effect on the production of Exosomes, it seems to activate what are called senescent cells. It also seems to activate Very Small Embryonic Like Stem Cells.

Lasers and light have a profound effect on many aspects of the cell. Light therapy goes down to the basics of cell biology. What we now know is that the mitochondria which are the powerhouses of the cells have photoreceptors. In light therapy there is absorption of photons in a portion of the mitochondria cells. This has a direct effect on the cellular electron respiratory transport chain. This involves the Krebs cycle which brings us back to biochemistry days.

ATP

The result in the improvement in the electron transport chain is greater production of ATP. ATP is the essential energy of most cells. If cells are exposed to more energy than they will typically be more efficient at doing their job. LLLT seems to paradoxically increase reactive oxygen species (ROS) in healthy tissue but most importantly it decreases ROS in those tissues which suffer from oxidative stress. So we have little effect adverse effects on normal cells from ROS but a significant positive effect on ROS in diseased tissue. The use of LLLT in patients involves mainly red and near infrared (NIR). The wavelength of this light is between 600-950 nm.

Low level light therapy have many profound effects on the cells. It appears that all genes from the antioxidant related category and genes related to energy metabolism and the respiratory chain were up regulated. It is thought that low level light therapy stimulates cell growth by influencing both directly and indirectly related to DNA synthesis and repair and cell metabolism. Stem cells are finicky enough. Anything we can do to nudge them along is so important. There is definitely more to come on this subject.
